Author Spotlight--Ann B. Harrison

Please welcome Ann B. Harrison and learn about her book A Mistress for Magnus

Blurb:

When Kate's father dies and leaves her the farm she thinks that his life insurance will cover the debts with the bank. She couldn't be more wrong. They want their money and she can think of no way out.
Magnus wants what Kate Holden has, the largest water supply in the valley. When he finds out that she is desperate for money he makes her an offer she can't refuse. Enough money to pay off the bank in exchange for water rights for six months. But when Magnus meets her, he decides to ask for much more.

"Mr. Lane?" A soft female voice quivered slightly as the words were spoken.
"Yes," he answered as he steady the mare, his hands soothing her. "And you are?"
"Kate. Kate Holden."
She was a good head shorter than him, her dark brown hair tucked under a dusty, battered Akubra. The red and black checked shirt which had seen better days hung on her slight frame; the sleeves rolled up to her elbows showed tanned arms. Her jeans, faded and dirty, were tucked into scuffed brown boots. She looked like a homeless waif.
"What can I do for you, Miss Holden?" A strange feeling tingled his scalp. Crossing his arms, Magnus watched the emotions roll over her face, a face that belonged to a Botticelli angel, not a dusty cowgirl. He suddenly realized he craved this woman with a passion that almost frightened him. Magnus pushed the feelings down and tried to concentrate on her next words.
"You were trying to negotiate with my father, weren't you?" she asked.
He nodded his head, not trusting himself to speak until he knew what she wanted.

"You wanted to buy us out, but that's something I can't do. I wondered if you'd be interested in buying water rights instead?" Kate was wary of the man in front of her. She stood dead still even though her heart thudded. With his heavily muscled arms, he looked every inch the hard businessman her father had warned her about. She had no choice. She had to try and talk him into buying what she had to offer.
"I hardly think this is the place to conduct a business meeting, Miss Holden," he said, looking down at her, a frown marring his brow. "But if you would care to come up to my office we can continue this conversation. Jock, would you mind putting the mare back in her stall please?"
Kate watched him stride away without a backward glance. Looking helplessly toward Jock, she shrugged her shoulders. Damn the man. We've only just met and already he has me running after him. She wiped her sweaty palms on her jeans and hurried to catch up with Magnus.
He led the way up onto the veranda and held a door open for her to enter. "Shall we?" he asked, taking her arm and guiding her down the wide hallway to his office. He dropped his body into the huge old leather chair behind his desk, then leaned back casually.
"Now, you were offering me water rights, is that right?" He picked up a pen from the desk, twisting it between his fingers while he kept his gaze on her.
"Y-yes," Kate stammered, startled as the fax machine rang. She was out of her depth in this plush house, the man opposite her making her insides turn to jelly. Ignoring the noise, she sat on the edge of the chair opposite him and continued. "You only offered my father money for the farm because you wanted the water."
"How do you know what I want, Miss Holden?" He sat up in his chair and reached to grasp the single page that spewed from the fax machine.
"That's what I was told." Kate could feel her stomach rolling and willed herself to settle down, clasping her hands in her lap.
"What if I asked for more than water rights, Miss Holden?" Magnus asked as his gaze scanned what appeared to be a sheet of figures and then found hers. "What if I said I wanted to buy the rights to your body as well?"
Kate shrank back into her chair as his words registered. She must have heard him wrong, surely. "What did you just say?" She gripped the arms of the chair, her fingers digging into the soft leather. A wave of shock went through her body, the air squeezing from her lungs. Panic gripped her chest, and Kate shook her head. "No, you didn't just ask me that."
"You heard me well enough." He glared at her. "You and the water rights are to be one package."
"You obviously do things different in the big city, Mr. Lane, but out here in the country it is customary to date a lady before trying to get her into bed. I'm not for sale like a bale of hay." Kate's very being bristled with anger and lifted her chin."

Author Spotlight: Ann B. Harrison

Hola! Hope you are all having a wonderful Thursday. I'm doing well, just off to another day of college. Before I go, I have the inspiring and very kind Ann B. Harrison. A few months ago, Ann was my very first blog guest, so naturally that makes her one of my most favoritest(yes, I have decided that is now a word) people ever. :-)
Today she is sharing Taming the Outback, which released last August with Breathless Press.

Ann:  Libby is a widow with two kids, a job going nowhere and a mortgage that she can barely afford. When she is told of an inheritance, she jumps at the chance to take her kids to the country and start a new life.
Unfortunately for her, the neighbor Nathan is horrified that a city chick is even thinking she can manage a large farm and tries to talk her into going back to what she knows.
Libby is determined to stick it out and keep her little family together.
The only problem is, Nathan does something to her sense of calm. When he is around, her temper is frayed, her emotions on a roller coaster.
She plans to seduce him thinking that once she does, things will settle down and she will be happier.

Excerpt:

“Damn, damn, damn,” she muttered, slamming her hand down on the steering wheel.
“What the hell just happened?” yelled Josh, his voice high with fright.
“The car has overheated,” said Libby knowing full well that there was more to it than that.
“Can you start it again when it cools down?” he asked.
“I don’t know, Josh,” Libby said, her heart pounding as she tried to think of what chances they had of being rescued on this dark deserted road.  Trying to sound brave she turned to him with an attempt at positive thinking. “Let’s wait and see, shall we.”
“Just great,” he snapped in his usual angry tone. “What a welcome to the country, broken down on the side of the road, no houses in sight and no hope of recovery.”
Holly sat quietly thumb in her mouth, holding onto Henry, with her gaze on her mother.
“Let’s just give it a minute, okay?” said Libby. “If the car won’t start, I will call Aaron and ask him to send Tom to get us. We aren’t that far from the farm.”
They sat in silence for 15 minutes before Libby felt confident that the car would have cooled down enough to start again. She sat up in her seat and put her hand on the key. Turning it, she held her breath. The clicking sound made her groan and she quickly turned off the key slumping back in her seat.
“I think you killed it, Mum,” said Josh.
“Thanks. I kind of figured that much.”
“What do we do now?” asked Holly in a small scared voice.
Before she could answer, lights blinded her in the rear vision mirror. She put her hand up to shield her eyes and got out of the car, telling the kids to stay put.
The four wheel drive truck pulled up behind her and the front door opened. She couldn’t see the occupant until he stood right in front of her, towering over her in the dim light. He was dressed in dusty work clothes, jeans snug on his broad hips. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows showing off strong tanned arms. An old worn hat was pushed down over his short hair, hiding his face as he stood looking down at her.
“Are you okay?” he asked in a deep voice that rolled over her triggering something familiar deep in her brain.
“No, my car overheated and now it won’t start,” said Libby sighing as she followed him to the front of the vehicle.
He shone a torch at the bonnet and told her to release it. He lifted the bonnet and stuck his head under it and looked around with his torch, muttering and cursing. He slammed it back down and turned to her.
“You have a broken radiator hose,” said the stranger. “The top one has completely blown and the bottom one is on its way out. Don’t you check your car at all? It’s a bloody mess under that hood.”
“My car runs fine normally,” said Libby, her back straightening. “But thanks for looking at it anyway. I won’t hold you up any longer.”
“Testy little thing, aren’t you?” he said, pushing his hat back on his head as he came closer to her his face barely visible in the fading light. “We don’t leave women on the side of the road out in this country.”
“What are you doing here?” Libby asked as she recognised the lawyer that had made such an impression on her at Aarons.
“I live here. The question should be ‘what’re you doing here?” he replied with a sneer before walking away from her.
Leaning on the back of his dust covered truck he pulled his mobile phone from his pocket and punched in a number. He glanced over at Libby pacing back and forward while he waited for someone to pick up.
He had known that she was due soon but he didn’t expect to meet her out on the highway, broken down.
“Tom, its Nathan, I’m out on the side of the road at the highway end, just before the turnoff. I think I have something that belongs to you,” he said grimacing as he looked back towards the women watching him. “You had better bring the truck out. Yeah, sure, I’ll wait with her. Don’t be too long, she’s a little bit fiery. Sure, bye.”
“So,” he said to walking back to stand before Libby. His heart was thumping and a thin sheen of sweat was making his face heat up as he let his gaze run over her body from her pert nose to her long bare legs. He noticed the blush on her cheeks while he scrutinised her under the torch light. Damn you Uncle Aaron, cute and fiery, he thought, too dangerous out here. If circumstances were different, another time and place he could get attached to this women. “You are the city chick that’s going to take Quincy Station into the black, eh? I wonder if you know what you are taking on, sweetheart?”

Cinder is not just another pretty face. He aspires to be his own man, but finds himself longing to belong to another man.
Cinder never thought that he could rise from the ashes of his life, but an unexpected encounter with a woman claiming to be his fairy godmother may be just what he needs. Finding himself flung into his very own fairy tale, she sends him off to meet his Prince Charming. But was the gown really necessary?

Excerpt:

Cinder glanced around. Paper lanterns floated in the trees, lined the walks, and graced the gazebo near the reflecting pool, giving the grounds a mystical air. Their warm glow caught the dancing jets of the fountain splashing merrily to his right. The musical, crystalline tones carried on the night wind’s breath. He was reminded of the enchanted gardens in the fairy tales his father had read to him when he was a child. What would happen to him if he dared walk there?

Henri led him toward the gazebo. Soon he would find out.

The cool breeze caressed his uncovered neck. Cinder shivered at the ethereal touch. Henri turned to him, the question clear in his eyes, but he didn’t know how to answer. Instead he breathed in the tangible scent of rich earth and flowing water, hoping to calm his bounding heart.

Henri lightly stroked his arm. Cinder’s breath caught at the silky brush of the other man’s fingers. He drew another shaky breath. Henri may have meant to soothe him; instead his touch set Cinder’s wayward body aflame.

They left the last of the courtiers behind as they entered the dim interior of the fanciful pavilion. Vines climbed its intricately carved posts, perfuming the air within. The music and voices of the aristocrats faded away. Only a single intrepid nightingale could be heard over the cheerful burbling of the fountain. Hidden from the rest of the court, an unworldly sense of peace filled him. Was his very own fairy tale about to come true?

Bespelled and bemused, he could feel the magic in every beat of his heart, in every trembling breath he drew.

Once inside the bower, Henri reached to cup Cinder's cheek. Unused to being touched, he nearly flinched away but managed to still, heart pounding, before giving himself away. The older man's thumb slid across his cheekbone and came to rest lightly on his mouth. Why did he want to lean into that caress?

The other man's warm, slightly musky scent filled his nostrils, drowning his senses.

Henri's other hand wrapped around his waist and drew him close. He leaned closer while tipping Cinder's face upwards. Cinder's breath left him in a rush, stirring the noble’s hair. Henri was all that he could see, his mouth slowly, carefully descending toward Cinder’s. If he allowed this, the other man might discover his deception. He couldn’t risk that, so why then did he ache to feel Henri’s kiss? Their lips brushed, light as thistle down.

Surprisingly, Henri's mouth was soft and warm upon his own. After a moment, it pressed more firmly against his. Something fluttered in his chest, trying to get out.

Cinder didn't think to pull away until he felt Henri's tongue seeking entrance. The hand on his face slipped to his nape and held firm. He froze in shock, not even daring to breathe, as flames rushed through his body. The very beat of his heart betrayed him.

The questing tongue stroked his lips and pushed between them. It slid over his teeth, seeking to enter. When he protested, Henri swept in and began a lazy, sensuous exploration that left him breathless.

Soon he found himself returning the caress. Henri responded to his fledgling attempts by pulling him closer and moaning into his mouth. He had never experienced anything so sensual and erotic. He fed his own needy pleas to the other man one at a time.

Finally they separated slightly, Cinder panting heavily, trying to catch his breath. Was Henri as affected by their kiss as he was? A quick glance confirmed Cinder was not alone in his arousal. Flushed and gasping, Henri gazed at him with eyes full of wonder and something unnamed smoldering in their depths.

Blurb:

While on a rescue mission, Faraway must save her ship from pirates before they destroy her Christmas.

Captain Faraway Hastings sets off on what she thinks is a regular rescue mission, even if it did have the bad timing to be on Christmas. Disparate reports from the medical officer and captain of the downed ship cause her to look more closely at the situation.

Ethan Roarke, lieutenant commander and chief medical officer, is frustrated with the time it's taking for help to come. When he learns that his captain has neglected to inform their rescuers of the dire straits his people are in, he's angry and concerned. But worse, his loyalties are now torn between his captain who lied and the one trying to save them.

When Fara and Ethan meet, the attraction is immediate and strong despite the circumstances. But can Fara and Ethan discover the pirates hidden amongst them before they kill everyone on the ship? Or are they doomed to miss out on their chance of a Merry Christmas?

Excerpt:

"I assure you, my people can count. And the tally with the last group waiting below is," she pushed some buttons on her wrist unit. "Seven hundred twenty eight men, women, and children. Would you like the breakdown?"

"I'm telling you. I have a complete list of our manifest here, and there are less than six hundred people, sir."

They stared at each other. "Well," she said after a beat of silence. "It seems we have ourselves some stowaways. Possibly—likely—dangerous ones."

"The other ship. I didn't think about it, but there were two main directions that the largest groups came from. That means," he stopped and looked to see if she'd had the same thought.

"That means, Lieutenant Commander Medical Officer Ethan Roarke, that as I'd suspected before landing my first shuttle there, the enemy is amongst us."

"Why would they do that? Why would my captain not tell me or you?"

"You know him better than I, but my take is he's trying to protect us. That, in his opinion, telling us would put us in more danger than not knowing. I happen to disagree. Knowledge is power in my experience."

"And mine," he replied. "It's not like him to withhold this type of information from me. He'd normally want me to be apprised so I can adequately prepare my medical team for the right kind of injuries. Have you asked the first officer?"

"No. I will do so once everyone's on board."

"He's in sickbay from injuries during the walk."

"Thank you for the information. In the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open. It goes without saying that I don't like having an enemy on my ship."

"Any more than I like that my captain may be responsible for allowing it to happen." Somehow, during the last part of their conversation, their voices had become quieter, as if they were afraid of being overheard. He'd placed himself so they were practically touching by the last word. When she said ship, a puff of air had landed on his lips. Their closeness made the tone of his response sound intimate as he dropped his volume in reaction to her closeness.

"I don't like hotheaded medics," she whispered.

"And I don't like pushy, bossy captains," he replied just as softly.

"Then you're going to hate me," she said and kissed him.
